PORTLAND HISTORY           (Go To Page 1 | 2)

In 1775 a British warship attacked the city starting a devastating fire which leveled the area. However, by the mid 1880’s, the huge undertaking of filling Portland’s small coves began and soon, new industry took hold in Eastern Waterfront.

The Grand Trunk Railway was tied between Portland and Montreal  and the area became a bustling center of commerce through the end of World War II.

Following the war, the economic and commercial shifted again, leaving the area in a slow downward slide. However, in recent years, the Eastern Waterfront has again become the focus of growth and creative development.

Comprehensive planning and
neighborhood investment are giving birth to a new vision for the Eastern Waterfront - infusing the neighborhood with the charm and spirit of its past.
